Fukushima’s Miharu Takizakura, known as the “waterfall cherry tree”, is one of Japan’s major cherry blossom trees. In the spring, the 1,000-year-old tree comes to life with bright pink petals covering it.
What happens?
While you can go to visit from 6 a.m., most people wait until the evening to see it illuminated. The viewing period normally starts from the day after the flowers bloom and ends when they have fallen. In 2026, the light up started on April 3.
Other cherry blossom spots around the town will be illuminated as well, these include:
- Oshirosaka Weeping Cherry Blossoms (Minami-machi)
- Sakuradani Weeping Cherry Blossoms (Sakuradani)
- Jorakuin Cherry Blossoms (Yoken-cho)
- Fukujuji Cherry Blossoms (Gomen-cho)
- Yasouchi Kamon Cherry Blossoms (Sakuragaoka)
- Tamura Omoto Shrine Cherry Blossoms (Yamanaka)
- Oji Shrine Cherry Blossoms (Omachi)

How to get to Miharu Fukushima Cherry Blossom Light up
This famous tree is located in Fukushima, Japan’s third-largest prefecture. For those coming by train, you will need to go to Miharu Station via the JR Ban-etsu East Line. From there, you can use one of the paid bus services that are set up during the flowering period. A free service will also run from Miharu Town Sports Park to the Takizakura Parking Lot. It will run every 30 minutes on weekdays and every 15 minutes on weekends.
If you are driving, you will need to get off at the Funehiki Miharu interchange. Alternatively, you can exit the Ban-etsu Expressway at Koriyama Higashi Interchange. There is free car parking available at Takizakura Parking Lot, but the official website recommends parking at Miharu Sports Park on the weekends to avoid congestion.
Organisers predict that the traffic will get quite busy during the viewing period, so remember to set off in good time.
