The Miyazakijingu Taisai (Miyazaki Shrine Grand Festival) is a traditional festival at one of Miyazaki Prefecture‘s major Shintō shrines with a history of more than 140 years.
What happens?
Held every October at Miyazaki Shrine, this festival honours Emperor Jinmu, Japan’s legendary first emperor, who set out from Kyūshū on his eastern expedition.
The highlight is the grand mikoshi procession: portable shrines depart from the shrine and wind through the city in a several-kilometre parade before returning.
Shrine priests on horseback, mounted archers in Kamakura-period attire, and children in bright costumes recreate the emperor’s journey, while the shishi lion dance purifies the path — its bite is said to bring happiness and good health. There will also be a float on display shaped like Jinmu’s ship.
Plenty of performances will take place, including kagura dances, taiko drums, and local dances.
As is customary at any matsuri, expect a variety of food stalls — plus exciting tuna-cutting demos and free samples to go around.
Organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
