Onomichi is a historic port city along the Seto Inland Sea in Hiroshima Prefecture. It was made famous by the classic Ozu film Tokyo Story (1953).
What happens?
Despite the love of things traditional here, the lanterns are rather more contemporary than you will find elsewhere. They are decorated with colorful pictures.
Schedule
The 21st Onomichi Lantern Festival takes place on Saturday, October 17, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Temples, pathways, and the area around Onomichi Station are lit with candle-lit lanterns. The event will be cancelled in case of severe weather.
Organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.
