Radish Festival

9:00am – 4:00pm
¥700 (on the door)

Eat some local radish and pray for good health and prosperity in the new year.

What happens?

Locals gather to cook up steaming vats of radish or daikon soup on the grounds of Sanzen-in Temple. The daikon is all organic and grown in Ōhara. Over four days, 3,000 radishes are turned into soup, filling around 10,000 bowls. This festival marks hatsu uma, the first horse day of February according to the lunar calendar.

Schedule and entry

While the radish soup is free to eat, you’ll need to pay entry for the temple (¥700 for adults). Get there by 4 p.m. if you want a bowl.

How to get there

To get to Sanzen-in Temple from Kyoto Station, take the Karasuma Subway Line to Kokusaikaikan Station, then transfer to Kyoto Bus Route 19 towards Ōhara and get off at Ōhara Bus Stop. Alternatively, you can walk to the Karasuma Shichijō Bus Stop and take Kyoto Bus Route 19 directly to Ōhara Bus Stop. The temple is a short walk away.
