Uncover Kyoto’s hidden treasures at the Tenjin-san Flea Market, one of Kansai’s biggest flea markets.

What happens?

On the 25th of every month, Kitano Tenman-gū in Kyoto transforms into a bustling marketplace known as Tenjin-san. This flea market, beloved by locals and tourists alike, offers an eclectic mix of antique kimonos, traditional pottery, handmade crafts, and even street food. The largest markets occur in January and December, attracting hundreds of vendors who set up stalls from early morning until sunset. It’s a vibrant scene where you can haggle for your favorite items, soak up the lively atmosphere, and explore one of Kyoto’s most famous shrines.

History

Named after Tenjin, the god of knowledge and scholarship, the market commemorates Sugawara no Michizane, a Heian period bureaucrat. Kitano Tenman-gū, built in his honor, hosts this monthly event as a tribute to his life. While shopping, don’t miss the chance to explore the shrine, known for its striking architecture and beautiful plum blossom gardens.

Schedule

The market runs from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. on the 25th of every month.

How to get there

From Kyoto Station, take Kyoto City bus 50 or 101 and get off at Kitano Tenman-gū-mae bus stop.
