This is one of Fukuoka’s three major summer festivals.
What happens?
This festival dates back over 200 years to when Tobata, located in the city of Kitakyushu, was a small village.
Yamakasa (also known as yamagasa) are towering festival floats carried through the streets. At night the floats are adorned with lanterns, making them an impressive sight. The festival has been recognized by the Japanese government as an important Intangible Cultural Asset. In 2016, it was also registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
