Tō-ji Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kyoto. The Kōbō-ichi (also known as Kōbō-san) Market is held on the 21st of each month.
What happens?
Every 21st of the month, the temple grounds host the lively Kōbō-ichi Market.
This is your chance to find unique souvenirs and enjoy a truly local Kyoto experience. Even if shopping isn’t on your agenda, wandering through the market is an experience in and of itself, and a must-do activity while you’re in Kyoto.
Named after Kūkai’s posthumous title, Kōbō Daishi, the market offers between 1,000 and 1,300 stalls selling everything from traditional crafts to food.
History
Tō-ji Temple, established in 796, is one of Kyoto’s most iconic landmarks. Originally built as a guardian temple for the city, it has overcome fires and earthquakes.
Schedule
The flea market takes place on the 21st of each month. It runs from around 5 a.m., when the temple gates open and stallholders start setting up, until about 4 p.m. Nearly every stall is open by 8 a.m., but each keeps its own hours, and they shift with the season and the weather.
