Discover Tōji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kyoto, and experience the vibrant Kobo-ichi (also known as Kobo-san) Market held on the 21st of each month.

History

Tōji Temple, established in 796, is one of Kyoto’s most iconic landmarks. Originally built as a guardian temple for the city, it has stood the test of time, overcoming fires and earthquakes to remain a central piece of Kyoto’s spiritual landscape. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to one of Kyoto’s biggest flea markets: the Tōji Temple Flea Market or Kobo-ichi.

What happens?

Every 21st of the month, the serene temple grounds transform into the lively Kobo-ichi Market.

This is your chance to find unique souvenirs and enjoy a truly local Kyoto experience. Even if shopping isn’t on your agenda, wandering through the market is an experience in and of itself, and a must-do activity while you’re in Kyoto.

Named after Kukai’s posthumous title, Kobo Daishi, the market is a feast for the senses, with between 800 and 1200 stalls selling everything from traditional crafts to delicious street food. The atmosphere blends the sacred with the everyday, as monks chant and people pray amidst the hustle and bustle.

Schedule

The flea market takes place on the 21st of each month. Stay updated by following the market’s official Instagram.
