Named after Kukai’s posthumous title, Kobo Daishi, the market offers between 800 and 1200 stalls selling everything from traditional crafts to food.

History

Tōji Temple, established in 796, is one of Kyoto’s most iconic landmarks. Originally built as a guardian temple for the city, it has stood the test of time, overcoming fires and earthquakes to remain a central piece of Kyoto’s spiritual landscape. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to one of Kyoto’s biggest flea markets: the Tōji Temple Flea Market or Kobo-ichi.
