Yanai Goldfish Lantern Festival

4:30pm – 9:00pm
Free

Glowing goldfish put on a show in hopes of revitalizing this small village in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

No goldfish are harmed in the conducting of this festival.

What happens?

Held to revitalize the quaint town of Yanai in Yamaguchi, this goldish festival sees local crafts take center stage. Around 4,000 goldfish lanterns are hung up around town and when dusk hits, around half of them start to glow. The decorations are put up from the end of July but the festival really takes off on August 13 from 4:30 p.m. On this day, large goldfish nebuta (large, lit-up floats like the ones in Aomori) will make an appearance, as well as plenty of dancing, food stalls, and goldfish-related performances.

How to get there

The festivities are held in the small town of Yanai, which is around 1 hour and 30 minutes from Hiroshima Station on the San-yo Line.
