The Tottori Prefectural Museum of Art is set to open on March 30, 2025. Sitting in Kurayoshi, Tottori Prefecture, right next to the Ōmidō temple ruins, the museum is designed to be a space for inspiration, learning, and creative exchange. San’in, comprising Tottori and Shimane, has quietly built a reputation as one of Japan’s secret art capitals. The Tottori Prefectural Museum of Art is set to be the next major piece in this puzzle. Exhibitions To kick things off, the museum is opening with “ART OF THE REAL: Timeless Art – From Jakuchū to Warhol and Richter” (March 30–June 15, 2025). This exhibition explores how artists across time and cultures have captured reality, featuring works from Itō Jakuchū’s intricate Edo-era paintings to Andy Warhol’s pop art and Gerhard Richter’s photorealism. Next up is something a little spookier: “Shigeru Mizuki’s Yōkai Hyakki Yakō Exhibition – How the Ghosts Were Born” (July 19–August 31, 2025). If you’ve ever been intrigued by Japanese folklore, this is the one to catch. Tottori-born manga legend Shigeru Mizuki (of GeGeGe no Kitarō fame) spent his career illustrating eerie, mischievous yōkai. This exhibition will dig into their origins, myths, and cultural impact. In the fall, “The Flower and Bird Paintings – Japanese Art and Living Creatures” (October 11–November 24, 2025) brings a more meditative experience. Featuring Edo-period masterpieces and modern interpretations, this exhibition is all about the connection between nature and Japanese art. Finally, the museum’s first year wraps up with “CONNEXIONS｜Connections – Connecting Artists” (February 7–March 22, 2026). The exhibition will focus on art as a shared language, bringing together Japanese and international artists to engage in dialogue.
