Near the Akiu Otaki Falls and the Akiu Onsen area, Rairaikyo Gorge is an easily-accessed scenic spot featuring a 20m-high cliff walk and some amazing views.
Rockhounds are in for a treat at Rairaikyo Gorge, as the fast-flowing Natori River, seasonally swollen with snowmelt, has carved beautiful rock formations and small waterfalls all along the course of the gorge. The walking trail along the gorge is especially spectacular in autumn.
Akiu is about 30 minutes by car from Sendai city centre, but it can be reached by bus. From Sendai Station, board bus bound for Akiu Onsen and get off at Nozoki-bashi.
