Shinsekai Market is a 100-year-old covered shopping street where locals go. Home to souvenir shops, homeware stores, and food vendors, it offers a taste of local culture and a nostalgic atmosphere.
Down the street, you’ll find a variety of interesting stores, each specializing in something different. These include a jazz store, a leopard-print shop, a tea store, a pickle shop, and much more. Each of these stalls has its own unique story and history — something you should take the time to read about here.
Near the end of the street, you’ll find a few yatai stalls where you can sit, chat with the person next to you, and enjoy some horumon (one of Osaka’s meaty delicacies).
This is the kind of place where you can strike up a conversation with shop staff and support the local community and its small businesses. Although it may look a bit rundown, that’s part of its charm and character — and what makes it so special.
There’s so much to discover — it’s a truly an underrated gem.
