Located in the center of the coastal city of Joetsu, Takada Castle and the surrounding park are reputed to be one of the best three places in Japan to see cherry blossoms at night.
Whether you go there by day or by night, the 4,000 cherry blossoms trees when in full bloom surrounding Takada Castle are undeniably spectacular.
The original castle was burned to the ground in in the 1870s, but was rebuilt and restored in the 1990s according to the original plans.
The castle is surrounded by an inner and outer moat. There is a boating pier on the inner moat from which visitors can rent rowboats.
Admission to the park is free, with the annual cherry blossom festival running from April 1st to 15th.
The castle is a 15 minute walk from Takada Station on the Echigo Tokimeki Railway.
