Nakamura Tokichi is one of Uji’s most renowned matcha establishments. The Kyoto shop is celebrated not only for its high-quality matcha, but its pivotal role in popularizing Uji matcha worldwide.
What’s Nakamura Tokichi Honten?
A designated Important Cultural Landscape, the main building houses both a shop and a café in Kyoto.
Although both are popular, most visitors come to dine at the café. The café offers a variety of savory and sweet dishes featuring the famous Nakamura Tokichi matcha. The prices are on the higher side — with the exclusive Maruto Parfait priced at ¥1,950.
If you end up falling in love with the matcha, which you most likely will, you can pick up some at the shop next door. The shop doesn’t just stock the tea, but also offers matcha-flavored cakes and wagashi, making them wonderful souvenirs. You don’t need to dine at the café to browse the shop.

Do you need reservations for Nakamura Tokichi Honten?
Due to its immense popularity, reservations are not accepted. Instead, you must go in person on the day and take a numbered ticket. We highly recommend arriving as early as possible, as the virtual queue fills up quickly.
However, keep in mind that even if you get your ticket early, you’ll likely still have to wait about an hour. By midday, most of the slots for the day have gone.
