Universal Studios Japan doesn't do many discounts -- but the decisions you make about where and when to buy, and what kind of access you want, can still save you a few yen towards that extra cauldron cake. Here's the full picture: ticket types, current prices, where to buy, and the savings that do exist. In a hurry? USJ tickets: Where to buy: 1-Day Studio Pass on Klook — authorized reseller, easy English booking, locks in busy dates. Adult – depending on the date Skip the lines: Express Pass add-on from around — note it doesn't include park entry Cheapo tip: pick a weekday (Tuesday to Thursday) on a cheap price tier, and if you're visiting in your birthday month (or the next), join Club Universal for free on the Japanese site for off a 1-Day Pass Jump to: Step 1: Pick your date Step 2: Choose your Studio Pass Step 3: Do you need an Express Pass? Halloween Horror Nights 2026 How and where to buy Discounts and other tickets Universal Studios Japan ticket FAQs Note: All prices include tax. USJ sets prices per calendar date and they do change -- treat the figures below as a guide (current as of August 2026) and always check the calendar for your exact date. Step 1: Pick your date Every USJ ticket is tied to a specific visit date, and the date sets the price -- so the single biggest money decision is which day you go. The same 1-Day Pass that costs on a quiet early-September weekday hits on peak days like Silver Week (September 19–22), most October weekends, and the Halloween weekend itself. Two timing rules to know. First, tickets go on sale on a rolling window of roughly two months ahead -- you can't book a date that hasn't been released yet, and popular dates can sell out, especially around Halloween Horror Nights and No Limit! Christmas. Second, there are no ticket windows at the park anymore -- USJ closed its booths permanently in May 2025 -- so plan to buy your date-specific ticket online before you go. In a pinch, same-day tickets are still sold online and at Lawson convenience stores (not at the gate), but popular dates sell out. Peak times cluster around Japan's school holidays and the big seasonal events. Here's how the year typically shakes out: Time of yearCrowds and pricesWhy Early JanuaryPeakNew Year holidays Mid-January to mid-FebruaryQuieterFew holidays -- typically a cheaper, calmer stretch Late February to MarchPeakSpring break and graduation trips April (before Golden Week)ModerateSchool terms restart; weekdays are calmer Late April to early MayPeakGolden Week Mid-May to JuneQuieterNo public holidays, and the rainy season thins crowds Mid-July to AugustPeakSummer school holidays, plus Obon in mid-August Early SeptemberQuieterSome of the cheapest weekdays of the year Silver Week (September 19–22)PeakA cluster of autumn public holidays OctoberPeak on weekendsHalloween Horror Nights season November to mid-DecemberModerateChristmas events build, but weekdays stay manageable Late DecemberPeakChristmas and New Year holidays Whatever the month, the day of the week matters too: a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday is typically the least crowded -- and usually the cheapest tier. Step 2: Choose your Studio Pass On the surface, USJ's tickets are pretty simple: you have a 1-Day Studio Pass, a 1.5-Day Studio Pass, a 2-Day Studio Pass, and a from-3-p.m. Twilight Pass -- plus the option of an Express Pass add-on (that's Step 3). 1-Day Pass – Adult: to depending on the date -- book on Klook 1-Day Pass – Child (4–11): from -- book on Klook 1-Day Pass – Senior (65+): from 1.5-Day Pass – Adult: from (enter from 3 p.m. on day one, full second day) -- book on Klook 2-Day Pass – Adult: from (consecutive days; cheaper than two 1-Day Passes) -- book on Klook Twilight Pass – Adult: from , entry from 3 p.m. -- a solid budget option if you're arriving in Osaka mid-afternoon. Sold via Klook 1-Day Accessible Admission Pass: from (visits from September 20, 2026), bookable on the official web ticket store with a disability certificate uploaded at purchase; one companion pays the same price Child and senior prices for the multi-day passes scale with the date in the same way -- check the price calendar when you book. A 12-year-old still in elementary school qualifies for the child price. Step 3: Do you need an Express Pass? To make the most out of your day, and avoid stress, consider getting a Universal Studios Japan Express Pass -- also known colloquially as a "Fast Pass". These special tickets reduce wait times and allow you to skip the queue. Most versions also guarantee entry to popular areas like Super Nintendo World and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The cheapo answer: on a quiet, cheap-tier weekday, you can often skip the Express Pass entirely and use the free timed-entry tickets in the official app (see below). On weekends, peak dates, or any day where Super Nintendo World or Harry Potter is non-negotiable, an Express Pass earns its keep. There are several Express Passes to choose from -- each with different inclusions and access. The first choice is whether you want an Express Pass for 4, 5, 7, or 8 attractions. Compare the prices below (note that they do not include the Studio Pass, which is needed for entry). USJ Express Pass for 4 attractions – from . USJ Express Pass for 5 attractions – ranging from to . USJ Express Pass for 7 attractions – from . USJ Express Pass for 8 attractions – from . At the top end, the all-attraction Express Pass Premium runs from around , and an unlimited version from -- for most of us, that is money better spent on more travel. Important: Express Passes are released around the middle of the month for the following month, and the popular versions sell out fast -- on peak dates, sometimes within hours. Buy your Express Pass together with your Studio Pass as soon as your date is released. USJ Express Pass for 4 attractions There are lots of variants, so start from your budget: Cheapest (from ): Race & JAWS, Mine Cart & JAWS, and Backdrop & The Flying Dinosaur -- each pairs one headline ride (Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge or Mine Cart Madness) with classics like JAWS and Hollywood Dream - The Ride. Show-focused (from ): Thrill Max, and 4-D & Space Fantasy. Family picks (from ): Minion & Hollywood Dream and similar lineups built around gentler rides. Top end (from ): Minecart & Jurassic Park. Most variants include an Area Timed Entry Ticket for Super Nintendo World -- check the inclusions on the exact variant for your date. You can compare all the 4-attraction variants on Klook. USJ Express Pass for 5 attractions Adventure Special (from ): Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge, Yoshi's Adventure, The Flying Dinosaur, Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem, Hollywood Dream - The Ride. Area Timed Entry Ticket: Super Nintendo World. Pricier variants (up to ) swap in Mine Cart Madness and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Browse the 5-attraction options on Klook. USJ Express Pass for 7 attractions Minecart & Selection (from ) covers: Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge Yoshi's Adventure Mine Cart Madness Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey Flight of the Hippogriff Your choice of The Flying Dinosaur or Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem Your choice of JAWS or Jurassic Park - The Ride Guaranteed timed entry to Super Nintendo World is included. Book it on Klook. USJ Express Pass for 8 attractions Mine Cart & The Flying Dinosaur Special (from ) is the widest coverage short of the Premium tier, spanning: The Super Nintendo World headliners, including Mine Cart Madness The Wizarding World of Harry Potter rides The big coasters, including The Flying Dinosaur Guaranteed timed entry to Super Nintendo World Check availability for your date on Klook. Important: The Express Pass lineup and inclusions change seasonally, so double-check the exact ride list for your date on the official website or Klook before buying. Once you buy your Express tickets, you will see that some of the attractions have timed entry and some don't. For those that don't, you can just go along whenever you like. For timed entry, go at the time printed on your ticket (get there a little early) and show it to a staff member. Is the Universal Studios Japan Express Pass worth it? The Express Pass isn't cheap, and when you add it to the cost of eating at the park, getting there and back, it can make the overall day pricey. That said, there are ways you can save a bit of money while inside the park. The main benefit is that it can take a lot of stress out of the day and guarantees entry into some of the most in-demand areas. It also massively cuts down the waiting time, so it is ideal if you are visiting during peak season. However, there are other ways that you can try to reduce your wait time, such as opting for single riders. It's not a guarantee like an Express Pass, but it is a free alternative. Additionally, it's important to note that some rides may be closed for maintenance on the day of your visit. As a result, even with the Express Pass, there's a chance you may not be able to experience your desired ride. At the end of the day, whether it is worth it or not comes down to the experience you want and how much money you think your time is worth. What are Area Timed Entry Tickets and Standby Entry Tickets? To enter the most popular areas of USJ, including Super Nintendo World, you need to know about Area Timed Entry Tickets and Standby Entry Tickets. Obtaining one of these tickets gives you access to that area at a designated time. If you don't get one of these, you may not be able to enter these sections. It is possible to get these tickets before coming to the park. Keep in mind that some authorized resellers sell bundles that include both the Studio Pass and Area Timed Entry Tickets, so purchasing these is the easiest option. The other option is to get an Express Pass that comes with an Area Timed Entry Ticket. Alternatively, visitors can get these tickets on the day -- both through the official app and ticket kiosk. Although it is free to do, you can only try once you have scanned in and entered the park. For the best chance of securing such tickets, we recommend downloading the app beforehand and registering your Studio Pass. Given that there are only a set number of Area Timed Entry Tickets available each day, there's a possibility that you won't be able to secure one. If that is the case, try applying for a Standby Entry Ticket on the app. This is basically a lottery for Area Timed Entry Tickets -- it does not guarantee a ticket, but gives you a chance. Note: During busy periods, you may also need to obtain an Area Timed Entry Ticket for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Halloween Horror Nights 2026 add-ons Halloween Horror Nights is back for its 15th year, running September 11–November 8, 2026, as part of the park's wider Universal Extreme Autumn program (from September 10). Expect zombie-filled streets after dark, plus horror mazes like Resident Evil Requiem: The Dive and the R-18 Lights Out: Nightmare Isolation. Here's how the ticket logic works, from free to spendy: Free with your Studio Pass: the street zombies and dance shows (from 6 p.m.), the HHN Academy show, and the Halloween ride overlays. Free, but app e-ticket required: the enclosed mazes -- including Resident Evil Requiem: The Dive -- need a free timed-entry e-ticket on top of your Studio Pass. These are only issued on the day, inside the park, through the official USJ app, so download the app beforehand and register your party's Studio Passes. They run out on busy days and can't be transferred. (Resident Evil actually runs beyond Halloween, through December 27.) Paid extras: Lights Out: Nightmare Isolation needs a separate show ticket (around , sold via the app and Japanese site; R-18, and Japanese-language only). Hardcore fans can also book the 18+ All Night pass (from ) for the September 25 overnight event. Skip the maze queues: three Halloween Express Pass 4 sets (each from ) bundle timed entry to specific mazes with regular rides. Note the mazes are not available to guests aged 14 and under (or junior-high-school students and below), and coverage changes with the pass type and date -- check the lineup for your date before you buy. Stick to official channels: the USJ website and app, or an authorized reseller. Tickets from anywhere else may not get you through the gate. How and where to buy USJ tickets Booking Universal Studios Japan tickets in English It is possible to buy your tickets directly from the official USJ site (in English), but we personally recommend buying your USJ Studio Pass through Klook, an authorized reseller. It's simple. The "authorized reseller" part is important: If you rock up with tickets purchased through any non-authorized resellers, you won't be able to enter the park unless you buy a new ticket on the day. Here's a step-by-step on how to buy your Studio Pass on Klook: Choose the date you want to visit and click "Check availability". Select the type of pass you want to get and add to the cart. Pay for your ticket using a credit/debit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Union Pay, etc.) Upon payment and the booking being confirmed, you will receive an email with your Klook e-ticket. Use the e-ticket on the Klook app or email to enter the park. Note: Follow the same process for the USJ Express Pass. One timing tip: a Klook e-ticket can only be scanned into the official USJ app from the day after purchase, so don't leave buying until you're on the train there. Booking USJ Osaka tickets in Japanese Another option is to book directly on the Japanese USJ website. This can be manageable if you use Google Translate (which works well on Chrome), and offers some unique discounts. Discounts and other tickets Special birthday discounts at USJ Osaka There are some discounts to be had on the Japanese site if it is your birthday. If you're visiting during your birthday month or the following month, you can save on a 1-Day Pass and on your 2-Day Pass. Children get off on a 1-Day Pass and on a 2-Day Pass. You do have to be a member for this deal, but you can sign up for free, so it's an easy save. There are also discounts for visitors with disabilities -- see the 1-Day Accessible Admission Pass in Step 2. VIP tours and group bookings For a luxury experience, the Universal VIP Experience includes priority access to attractions, a dedicated tour guide, and access to a premium lounge, with Group tours from and Private tours from . At the other end of the scale, group bookings are available for groups of 40 and above -- if you are visiting as a school or other big group, contact USJ or a local travel agency for the best deals. Special event and ride tickets As mentioned, Universal Studios Japan hosts a number of events throughout the year. Some, such as the New Year Countdown event, require an additional ticket like an Area Timed Entry Ticket or Standby Entry Ticket. Rides such as Detective Conan: The Escape, also require a separate ticket. The enclosed horror mazes at Halloween Horror Nights also need a free timed-entry e-ticket from the official app (see above). Neighborhood ticket shops (kinken) Discount ticket shops (called kinken) and vending machines are a good place to save a few hundred yen on your Universal Studios Japan entry pass, but can be complicated. Usually you can save 5–10% off the retail price, but some Japanese ability is needed. You probably won't save enough to warrant making a special subway trip, so if there isn't a ticket shop near you, it's probably not worth it. If you've noticed one nearby though, it could be good for as much as off the regular price. Coming from Tokyo? It can work out cheaper to buy a package deal covering your entry pass and transport. There are various USJ bus packages available from Willer Express -- including your entry ticket, transport, and optionally a hotel -- or you can make your own way there with highway bus tickets from Tokyo to Osaka for as low as one way. Universal Studios Japan ticket FAQs Can I change the date of my USJ ticket? Sometimes. Studio Passes and Birthday Passes generally allow admission-date changes, but Express Passes do not. On the official site, date-change rules vary by ticket type -- check the conditions shown at purchase. Klook lets you use your ticket on another date within 90 days, as long as the new date is in the same price tier. Either way, changes are handled through the "purchase history" section of the site you bought from. Do I need to print out my USJ ticket? No, you don't need to print out your USJ ticket. Simply use the e-ticket and scan its QR code to register your Studio Pass on the app. What time does USJ open? USJ can open anytime between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. depending on the day or season. Check the official schedule beforehand, as these times can change. It is especially important to check if you are considering buying Express tickets after you entered the park. While we do our best to ensure it's correct, information is subject to change. This post was originally published in June 2020. Last updated: August 26, 2026, by the editorial team.
