One of the larger islands in Matsushima Bay (one of Japan’s Three Great Views), Fukuurajima is reached by a 250m-long red lacquered bridge. There isn’t much on the island except the area’s famous pines, a temple, and a scenic walk along the shore. In the summer months, a large open area allows for picnics and games. It doesn’t take much more than an hour to traverse the perimeter, but allow extra time for taking in the spectacular views of water, stone islands, and pines.

Local belief says that you’ll have a chance encounter on the bridge, so keep your eyes open!
