Better known as Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, or even Kyoto Bamboo Forest, Sagano is probably one of the most photographed spots in Japan.

Voted one of the nation’s top 100 soundscapes, the sound of swaying bamboo is a meditative experience (provided you go early enough to avoid the other visitors). The forest paths are over 500m long and offer plenty of photogenic spots between Nonomiya Shrine and Tenryuji Temple.

Pro tip: Another must-see in Kyoto is The Philosopher’s Path.
