Gaogao is a stylish restaurant near Ōhori Park that offers an esthetic twist on traditional Japanese cuisine.

What’s Gaogao?

  • The seabream at Gaogao.

The concept of this contemporary restaurant works in three steps. First, you choose from four different “Hanakago Gozen” options, which include sea bream, fresh seasame mackerel, beef filet, or pork tonkatsu.

Next, you select the type of rice. One of the standout features of Gaogao is that the rice is cooked in a claypot, which is known for its flavor.

There are 10 types of rich dishes to choose from, all using ingredients primarily sourced from Kyushu. Some options include meat miso rice, Hakata Mentaiko and salted mackerel, and Black Wagyu rice.

Your meal will be served in a beautiful woven flower basket, along with a variety of local side dishes. You really get to experience a whole range of flavors and local cuisines here. As if that weren’t enough, you’ll also get a dessert.

The final step is that your leftover rice can be made into onigiri for you to take home.

Note: Prices vary depending on which main dish and type of rice you choose. The main dishes range from ¥2,420 to ¥3,300, while the rice options range from free to ¥1,980.
