Toyama is a prefecture in the Chūbu region of the island of Honshu, bordered by the Sea of Japan to the north, Niigata to the northeast, Nagano to the west, Gifu to the south, and Ishikawa to the west.
With its proximity to the Sea of Japan, the prefecture sees heavy snowfall in winter. A popular sightseeing activity in the prefecture is a bus tour over the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. From April 15th until June, the route is lined with towering walls of snow.
Other popular sightseeing destinations in the prefecture are the Kurobe Gorge, and the village of Gokayama with its unique gassho-zukuri houses—a UNESCO registered world heritage site.
