Onbashira Matsuri, Japan from OH! MATSURi on Vimeo.

Stunning video from OH!MATSURI  captures the the breathtaking atmosphere of Nagano’s Onbashira festival—held once every 6 years. Trees are felled and transported by locals to nearby shrines via rivers, slopes and sometime, death.  In 2016, one local resident was killed, during the second phase of the festival where the logs are erected to represent renewal. If you missed Onbashira, you can still try some of Japan’s more unusual festivals yourself!
