Located in the north of the Kanto region, Tochigi is one of 8 landlocked prefectures in Japan.
Tochigi is famous for its history (Nikko was where the Tokugawa clan came from – the family of shoguns that ruled Japan continuously for 265 years) and its abundant nature. The terrain ranges from verdant green rice paddies to densely forested hills. Driving around the mountains, it’s not unusual to come across nihon zaru (Japanese monkeys).
There are some rather good train and accommodation packages available to take you from Tokyo to Nikko in comfort, house you while you’re there, and give you a chance to explore Nikko.
