For the second year running, Kyoto has been named as the world’s top travel destination by Travel + Leisure Magazine.
Although the magazine targets travelers at the other end of the spectrum from Japan Cheapo, their readers do get around so they at least have a good frame of reference.
In the survey of readers, Kyoto scored an A+ rating of 91, beating out Charleston, South Carolina (!?) and Cambodia’s Siem Reap – home to the famed Angkor Wat temple complex.
No other Japanese cities made the top 10. After Charleston and Siem Reap came (in order) Florence, Rome, Bangkok, Krakow, Barcelona, Cape Town and Jerusalem.
